Patricia Zenklusen creates sensual works with a chainsaw

Patricia Zenklusen designs her wooden sculptures in an unconventional way. She explains, “I work exclusively with the chainsaw. I am fascinated by the challenge of creating something delicate with this tool. It interests me how much elegance I can bring into a figure. At the same time it should stay noticable, where the limits of this technique are. “

Therefore, no other tools are used after sawing: once the artist cut her character out of a tree trunk, she only paints it with pigments.

All the sculptures of Patricia Zenklusen have figurative, organic shapes. Mostly it is their objective to capture movements in moments. Sometimes it’s a ballerina, sometimes extreme moves of a hip-hop dancer, or an elegant acrobat doing a handstand on a ladder.

Physicality and dynamism characterize the distinctive style of Patricia Zenklusen’s sculptures. The organic structure of wood has a special meaning for her, as she says: “Wood has always been my element. To work with it, is something very sensual for me. With each sculpture I find out more about a tree, its history, its task fulfilled. When the tree comes to me he has reached the end of its life circle but can still give a lot of pleasure.”

About three years ago Patricia Zenklusen began with her work – she got acquainted with the chainsaw more by accident as she was taking care of her garden. For several months she has been working regularly in a wood shed in the Mühliberg-forest above Affoltern in Zurich (Switzerland). She also visits the Scuola di Scultura di Peccia in the Maggia Valley in Ticino several weeks per year where she can totally focus on her sculptures and improve her technique.
